The Truth About Freezing Your Eggs (From Someone Who Did It, Twice)

The Truth About Freezing Your Eggs (From Someone Who Did It, Twice)

There’s a moment in every thirty-something woman’s life when the group chat turns into a candid therapy session about fertility. It starts innocently enough, maybe someone’s claiming they’re staying single forever, or another just got their dream job at 35 and someone says “you might want to consider freezing your eggs” like it’s as casual as ordering an iced matcha. Suddenly, brunch is a mix of avocado toast and biological panic.

Let’s talk about it.

I froze my eggs. Twice. And let me be the first to tell you a few things about the process. It was not glamorous, not easy, and definitely not cheap. But it was necessary, for me. That’s the one thing I want to focus on here. It might not be necessary for you. So before you drop five figures and rearrange your entire calendar around injections, let’s unpack this.

First: what even is AMH? How do I get started? How did you know you should freeze your eggs?

AMH (Anti-Müllerian Hormone) is the test that tells you roughly how many eggs you’ve got left in the reserve. It’s one blood test that can give you a whole lot of insight, and a whole lot of feelings. My AMH results? Not great. Which is why I moved fast and froze those eggs like it was my job.

If your AMH is solid and you’re not sure if kids are in your future…pause. Think. Reflect. Because freezing your eggs isn’t a guarantee, it’s a maybe. It’s a “here’s a chance” not a “you’re covered.”

And here’s the other kicker, it’s expensive. I’m talking five figures, not covered by most insurance, and that’s before you even get to storage fees. Emotionally, it’s also a lot. The hormones can mess with your mood, your skin, your relationship… basically everything. And while I’d do it again, I wouldn’t wish it on anyone who doesn’t need to.

Here’s what I wish we were taught in our early twenties!

  • Don’t freeze your eggs just because your friend is, or an influencer is telling you to, its not only a huge amount of money but it isn’t always necessary.
  • Don’t do it just because you hit 30 and society says you’re “behind.” Sure, I was 30-something when I decided to do it, but I first decided to do an AMH test first and see what the results were, before I dived into egg freezing options.
  • Do it because it makes sense for your life, your body, and your version of the future.

If I can give you one piece of advice it is to go get your AMH tested. It’s a $100-ish blood test that can save you from making a $10,000 decision.

I break down the entire experience, the needles, the meltdowns, the why behind it all on LAZYGIRL POD. If you’re thinking about freezing your eggs or just want to hear the real, unfiltered version from someone who’s done it twice (and lived to tell the tale), go give it a listen.

This journey isn’t one-size-fits-all. You don’t need to panic-freeze your eggs to feel like you’re taking control. If you have any questions feel free to send me a DM, comment or email.
